In 2016, Donald Trump said he could eliminate America’s debt “over a period of eight years.” Unfortunately, he has done the precise opposite. 

The U.S. national debt officially reached $40 trillion for the first time in history on Wednesday. That number represents an over $17 trillion increase since 2020 alone, a $30 trillion hike since 2008, and an average of nearly $120,000 for every American. The government pays $4,000 per citizen on interest alone each year.

This did not happen by accident. America’s financial calamity is the direct result of Washington’s insane spending addiction, highlighted by things like the Big Beautiful Bill and the forever war machine. We know this issue may seem boring, but it is a driving force behind our country’s affordability crisis. Having a sky-high debt sends inflation through the roof, which drives up prices for essentially everything. The American Dream will die unless our leaders act like adults and fix this problem. This stunt from Rick Scott does not give us much optimism.
